This project is a decompilation effort targeting The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for the Nintendo 64. We are recreating a source code base from scratch by leveraging data and dynamic analysis of the game. The goal is not to create a PC port, but to provide a functional and detailed decompilation of the game's code. We are primarily using Python and various tools to extract, disassemble, and rebuild the game's code and assets.
The project's core strength lies in its comprehensive approach to decompilation, involving asset extraction, code disassembly, and ROM rebuilding. It supports the US version of the game, with plans for future expansion, and provides detailed build instructions for various operating systems. The project fosters a supportive community and emphasizes open collaboration through clear contribution guidelines.
- Core Decompilation Engine: Extracts and disassembles ROM data into functional code.
- Asset Extraction: Automatically extracts assets like images and audio from the ROM.
- Cross-Platform Build: Supports compilation and building on Windows, macOS and Linux environments.
- Detailed Documentation: Provides comprehensive guides for setup, building, and contributing to the project.
- Community Support: Active Discord server and collaborative development practices.
The project is actively under development, with continuous improvements and bug fixes. Recent commits indicate ongoing work in code disassembly and ROM rebuilding processes. Documentation is expanding, and community engagement is growing. The project's reliability is dependent on the quality of the source ROM and the complexity of the disassembly process.
This project benefits reverse engineers, modders, and anyone interested in understanding the inner workings of classic video games. It allows for deeper analysis of game mechanics, provides a foundation for potential modding endeavors, and serves as a valuable learning resource for low-level programming and reverse engineering techniques. It offers an alternative to manual game analysis and provides a framework for automated decompilation.
